When basketball was created in 1891, the game was only appreciated by men of that time. Not so long after the first game was played, girls' basketball was already brewing to be another genre of sport.

The roots of the AAU Girls Basketball started way back in 1926. It was in this year that the first women’s championship took place. AAU basketball conducted the event after years of public clamor for a women’s basketball. It will only be in 1972 that the AAU Girls Basketball will be officially founded. Through the years there was only one category for the women’s basketball while age or skills specific to games does not exist. It was also the AAU Girls Basketball who saw the need to make some brackets for the girls' basketball.

To be a part of the AAU Girls Basketball, one doesn’t need to go to a major city in your area. The Girls in AAU Basketball will be very glad that you are interested in joining a team. AAU basketball is almost available in all cities and finding one is no problem. You can even create your very own AAU Girls basketball team. Just make sure the team has a proper coach and place to practice and develop the skills. Of course, an important factor also is the players who are willing to spend time in this sport. Expect some fees in establishing your very own team.

After joining or creating a team, you can be part of various AAU Girls Basketball tournaments. As long as you keep on winning, the scope of competition increases. AAU is national organization and the competition is nationwide. Even if you are in California, a state champion will eventually face someone from another state, for example the AAU Basketball girl’s teams, Texas.

The center of all AAU Girl's Basketball tournament is the Junior Olympic Games which for this year will be held in Tennessee. Champions from all districts, teams who have showed great skills in the super regional tournament and Disney Spring fling will be there in a bid to capture the crown. Like most the AAU games, the AAU girls' basketball will be age specific from eight under to the senior which is no older than 20 years old.

Just recently the AAU Girls basketball has launched a program for the development of its Coaches. It now boasts of having more than 300 tournaments and 64 super regional events. Below that are more than 3,000 district qualifiers in all over the country.
