Big East Basketball
The history of the Big East basketball goes way back in 1979, dedicating itself solely to basketball. The conference was originally created for the sole purpose of the developing its basketball program. However, the conference decided to expand to other sports 10 years later. The conference currently has 16 full time members with 1 associate member (Loyola College).
The dedication to basketball has given the Big East conference basketball the status of a power house. NBA stars like Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Morning and Dikembe Mutombo were products of Georgetown Hoyas one of the founding schools of the Big East basketball conference.
Part of the Big East sports program, Big East Basketball has made records for the past years. Connecticut won the men and women’s basketball at the same time in 2003-04. After that year, Syracuse and UConn of the Big East Women’s basketball won the men’s and women’s basketball respectively. With that win, Big East Basketball made history. They are the first conference to win back to back championships in both men and women basketball.
Like most of the conferences around NCAA, Big East Basketball tournament starts in March. This single elimination competition will determine the one who will have an automatic slot in the top 64 teams for the NCAA national Championship. The seeding for the elimination is determined by Big East Basketball standings during the regular season where each Big East Basketball team go on to face each other. Usually the elimination will run for four to five days.
Unlike other tournaments, the Big East Basketball championship is held in only one place. For many years, the Madison Square Garden in New York caters to the Big East Basketball tournament schedule. In this world famous basketball court, the 2007 Big East Basketball tournament was held and it was the Hoyas who garnered the top spot. They went on to be one of the final four teams in the NCAA. For the 2007 Big East Women’s basketball championship, Rutgers clinched the championship. Big East basketball tickets are always a sell out in both basketball championships.
Big East Basketball has continually been compared to the ACC. ACC vs. Big East Basketball has great impact that draws large crowds. During the NCAA national tournament, the ACC basketball logo and the Big East Basketball Logos are on display during the games and in their respective conferences to remind the players of the great tradition of sports excellence.
