Many people may know what basketball is. Many people may even play basketball every now and then. Many people watch basketball games from time to time. Well good thing you are reading this article because this article will tell you all about the basketball RPI.

So what is the meaning of RPI rankings in basketball? The RPI is an acronym for ratings percentage index. The basketball RPI is one of the formulas that is being used to rate basketball teams in leagues such as the NCAA. There’s the NCAA women's basketball RPI and at the same time a mens basketball RPI. Now before you get a detailed explanation about the NCAA basketball RPI, first know about the history of basketball RPI ratings.

The RPI basketball was created back in 1981. It was invented to support evaluation, selection, and seeding of teams in basketball especially in the championship bracket. It’s an additional tool for evaluation and cannot be used alone. Women’s and men's basketball RPI standings are already a computerized process. A computer program should not be the only basis on how well a basketball team is doing in the league. It cannot say whether the loss of a basketball player will affect the game play or not. But to make it simple, it doesn’t affect a team’s victory.

The NCAA basketball RPI ratings can be calculated through three sections or parts. The first part is 25 percent of the formula. The first part is the percentage of the winning team. Each of either the road loss or home win of a team gets multiplied by 0.6 which is a bonus or penalty system that NCAA has created back in the 2005 season. On the other hand a multiplier of 1.4 is used for a home loss or road win. For other games, it will simply count as 1.0. Now, the second part is the average percentage of the winning opponent. This counts as 50 percent of the basketball RPI. First calculate the opposing team’s individuals winning percentage then average it. Lastly the third part counts 25 percent of the total basketball RPI. It is simply the average of the opponents’ part two winning percentage values.
