National Invitation Tournament

The National Invitation Tournament or the NIT is a men’s college basketball tournament. It was created in the year 1938 by the Metropolitan Basketball Writer Association. In the first year, there were 6 teams in the tournament, and after a couple of years, it featured 8 teams. The number of teams in the National Invitation Tournament continues to increase and it reached a peak of 40 teams between 2002 and 2006. In NIT 2007, a total of 32 teams took part in the tournament.

There are two NIT basketball tournaments each season. The first NIT tournament is played in November, which is also called the NIT Season Tip Off or the Preseason NIT. The NIT Season Tip Off was established in 1985. In March, the teams will have a post-season tournament. This second tournament started in the year 1938. The final round of the tournament was played in Madison Square Garden, New York. The NIT Season Tip Off and the post-season tournaments were carried out by the MIBA or the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association. But in the year 2005, the NCAA or the National Collegiate Athletic Association took over the MIBA, and these tournaments are now managed by the NCAA.

People always make a fuss about NIT basketball because they know only the best teams will be in the tournament, which gives the audience a most interesting championship. If you want to see which teams played against whom in the 2007 NIT, you need to check the 2007 NIT bracket.
