Southeast Division

In 2004, the NBA decided to change the four-division-format into a six-division-format. This was implemented after the inclusion of Charlotte Bobcats into the NBA. The Southeast Division was created in 2004 together with the Pacific Division in the west. The teams that make up the Southeast Division are Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Bobcats and Atlanta Hawks. For the past three years since its inception, the Miami Heat had been the division champion of the Southeast Division. This division achieved glory when the Miami Heat became the NBA champions for the first time in 2006.

However, there are also teams in this division that have shown great potential in the Southeast Division. The Washington Wizards, led by their All Star guard Gilbert Arenas, have shown the world of basketball the level of intensity one man can bring to the league. With phenomenal scoring in each game, Gilbert Arenas has really set the tone for one man show. Unfortunately, Arenas was injured just days before the playoffs. That prevented him and the team from showing their true form when they were swept I the first round by Lebron James’ Cavaliers.

Orlando Magic is also a great basketball team led by Grant Hill. With such young players, the team can actually run the floor for the entire game. Grant Hill may not be the same when he was just a rookie in Detroit, but players like Dwight Howard, Tony Battie and Darko Milicic add fresh legs everyday to the team. The team is not exactly among the top teams in the NBA, but they can very well compete when everyone steps up to the challenge.

Another team to look out for in the Southeast Division is the Charlotte Bobcats. Partly owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan, the team is still building up for a great role in the division and ultimately in the league. Famous rapper Nelly is also part owner of this young basketball team. With rookie of the year Omeka Okafor and Brevin Knight, this young team is primed to be a team to reckon with in the near future. Their league records are better than expected, and they will surely improve with time.

And to complete the Southeast Division, we have the Atlanta Hawks. They are one of the oldest teams in the division. But the team’s experience in the league does not necessary reflect their performance, finishing last in the division this season. The team is led by Josh Smith, with players like Joe Johnson, Lorenzen Wright.
