Phoenix Suns
Phoenix Suns history goes way back to the year 1968. The NBA had given a go-ahead signal for a group of individuals from Tucson, Arizona to build an NBA team. It was then that the Phoenix Suns was born, together with the first Phoenix Suns Stadium which was the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The first Phoenix Suns logo was designed for only $200.
The early years of the Phoenix Suns was better than expected for a new team. It was in 1976 that the Phoenix Suns basketball team upset the then favorites Golden State Warriors, and went to the NBA finals where they lost to the Boston Celtics. This excellent basketball performance would go on until the 80s, and up to then, the Phoenix Suns had gone to the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons.
In the middle of their great success, the franchise was rocked by a drug scandal in 1987 that included three Phoenix Sun players. It was then that the team was sold to its new owners for $44 million. These events caused the team to perform rather badly for the season, but they eventually rebounded the next season. Jeff Hornaceck, Dan Majarle, and Kevin Johnson finally wore Phoenix Suns jerseys, and the team began its 13-year streak of playoff appearance. Phoenix Suns playoff tickets were sold out during those times. The team went on to face the Bulls in the 1993 NBA finals with Charles Barkley playing with the team, but they lost the series in six games.
Thereafter, the Phoenix Suns went through a period of rebuilding. Then, Steve Nash was drafted by the Suns as a back-up point guard. He was there to play second fiddle to Jason Kidd, and had only played a few games in the Phoenix Suns schedule during those times. In the 2003–2004 season, the Suns traded several of their big players, including Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway to the Knicks. By right, it would have been a discouraging situation for the Suns but it only opened doors to a stronger and faster team. Steve Nash went on to become season MVP and showed the world a whole new brand of ballgame. Amare Stoudamire scored an average of 37.0 points in his first ever conference finals. With further acquisition of Raja Bell, Kurt Thomas and Boris Diaw from Joe Johnson’s trade, the Suns are suddenly a serious contender for the championship.
Support for the team is better than ever, which means more sales for the Phoenix Sun newspaper and more games on the Phoenix Suns TV schedule. Sales of Phoenix Suns tickets are on the rise, together with Phoenix Suns apparel. Even the Phoenix Suns cheerleaders are enjoying the great success. There is even a fan base for the Phoenix Suns dancers, who are famous personalities in Phoenix, Arizona.
