Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks was originally founded as a part of the National Basketball League. It was then called the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. After a year playing for the NBL, the Hawks was transferred to the NBA and they showed great potential in the playoffs with legendary player Red Auerback. Later in 1951, the team transferred to Milwaukee and changed its name to Hawks. In 1955, they transferred to St. Louis and in that city, the Hawks were able to capture their first and only NBA crown so far. The year was 1958, and they defeated the Celtics in six games.

The team finally moved to Atlanta in 1968. The Atlanta Hawks’ current home court, the Phillips Arena, was their home since 1999. The highlight of the team’s modern history took place between 1985 and 1989. In those years, Atlanta Hawks basketball was at its prime, winning more than 50 games a season with their superstar Dominique Wilkins. The Atlanta Hawks basketball team was up against very strong teams, including the Boston Celtics and the Detroit Pistons, and they did considerably well despite the competition. The 1988 Atlanta Hawks lost to the Bucks in the first round of the playoffs, even after they won 52 games.

Disaster continued for the team when Atlanta Hawks rumors came true. Dominique Wilkins who was with the Atlanta Hawks for 11 continuous playoff appearances was traded for Danny Manning. After Wilkins was gone, many fans withdrew their support for the team, forcing the management to sell discount Atlanta Hawks tickets at ridiculously low prices. The team somehow rebounded between the years 1992 and 1998, winning an average of more than 45 games a season. This happened under the guidance of Lenny Wilkins, the same coach who guided them in the late 80s. However, the same curse haunted them when they reached the playoffs.

The team has recorded the lowest winning season in the NBA, winning only 13 games in the 2004-2005 season. The Hawks now holds the longest drought for playoff appearance, which is eight years. However, supporters can still show their support for the team. The Atlanta Hawks website offers various merchandises, like the Atlanta Hawks fitted hats and Atlanta Hawks jerseys with the official Atlanta Hawks logo.
