Street Basketball
What is street basketball? It is actually a basketball game that is taken out of the basketball courts and into the streets. Street basketball is played on courts on the street, in gymnasiums and anywhere where there is a basketball court. Otherwise known as streetball, this game is played with any number of players, ranging from the usual 5 man teams you see on professional basketball games to pairings of one player for each team, one attacker and one defender, also called a one-on-one.
Basketball street moves are pretty different from the usual basketball moves you see on the court. Since this type of basketball game usually focuses on the one-on-one type, the moves you see these players perform include tactics to distract opponents to ensure a clean shot. There are also moves that include impressive dunks, fake-out moves and unbelievable footwork.
Learning how to play street basketball is essentially an easy thing to do as long as you know how to move around the court in a stylish manner. While the general rules of basketball do apply to the game, there is no real set street basketball rule for players to follow. Rules for the game vary from one court to another.
Streetball is considered both a sport and a performance art because of the cool moves streetball players execute on the court. A good example would be the street basketball dunks these players do. While dunking is an acceptable move on the professional courts, there are certain rules that professional players have to follow when dunking. In street basketball, flamboyant dunks are performed more freely since there are no rules that say you cannot do these kinds of moves. These outstanding moves on street basketball courts have led to some video contests that feature these artistically executed athletic moves. Street basketball contest videos are made by either the players themselves or enthusiasts who frequently watch these games. Contest organizers usually ask contestants to submit street basketball clips of their own performances, or to submit videos of friends, for a chance to win attractive prizes that could be cash or basketball related prizes.
Just like professional and college basketball leagues, street basketball also has its own league. The street basketball league is made up of street basketball teams from different locales which are officiated by the SBA or the Street Basketball Association. This organization was put up to help the streetball players get some form of recognition, or even to help them get discovered for the pros.
